the notion of being required to pay for an OS seems absurd, especially if no one else can modify its kernel.

the notion of being required to pay for a movie seems absurd, especially if no one else can copy it unless they buy it too.
Actually that helps explain it a bit. I think of fonts as letters, numbers, symbols - a tool to produce art. You're thinking of them as a creative work in and of themselves. I understand why I would need to pay if I wanted to reproduce a book, or even a section of a book, because it is someone else's creative work. I don't see fonts as being copyright-able though. Obviously they are, or else someone would have long ago copied all of the fonts and there would be avenues for getting them without paying for them. If I saw a typeface on a canvas in a museum I'd call it art. But as a file on a computer used to produce what I would call creative works, it is a tool, not a work of art in and of itself. Thank you for your patience. I still don't think that fonts should cost money, but I understand why someone would think that they should cost money. I suspect that the notion of owning fonts can be traced back to when printing required moveable type blocks for printing presses. Producing those blocks required effort and a physical product that you had to purchase.
